ESA ESRIN Visitor Centre
Expansion of the innovative world of experience for earth observation
In Frascati, near Rome, the European Space Agency (ESA) opened the expanded ESA ESRIN Visitor Centre in October 2023. The European Centre of Excellence for Earth Observation offers an impressive combination of satellite images, real-time data and an interactive rocket launch. The new exhibition area was realised in a proven collaboration between ESA, Ars Electronica Solutions and Garamantis.
Innovative Earth Observation Experience
At the heart of the extension is a new multimedia centre, which was previously a productive control room for Earth observation satellites. Here, visitors can immerse themselves in the world of space and learn about Earth observation and its impact on science and everyday life. Modern media design and a specially developed sound concept create an immersive learning experience that makes complex topics understandable for all age groups.
New interactive exhibits
One of the highlights of the exhibition is a cut-away rocket model. It uses projections, sound and light to simulate a rocket launch. A digital countdown announces future ESA missions. For children, the space mascot ‘Paxi’ offers playful tours of ESA topics on an interactive projection wall. The interactive wall is six metres long, projected by three special projectors and wraps around a 90-degree corner of the room.
The Visitor Centre also provides an insight into the work of ESA’s ESRIN. As the largest archive of environmental data in Europe, it manages and coordinates more than 20 ground stations and facilities across Europe. Other interactive stations explain how satellite data is processed and how meteorites enter the atmosphere.
A place for learning and inspiration
The ESA ESRIN Visitor Centre serves as a platform to address current and future challenges in Earth observation. It provides an opportunity to experience science at first hand. Interactive exhibits, innovative technologies and an inspiring environment make the centre a magnet for visitors from all over the world.
