Space Expo

ESA’s interactive space museum in the Netherlands

Space Expo, the largest space museum in the Netherlands and the official visitor centre of ESA ESTEC (European Space Agency), offers a comprehensive insight into space travel. Visitors can touch real meteorites, launch a hydrogen rocket and see the original Sojoez capsule up close. Another highlight is the tour through a replica of the International Space Station (ISS), which offers a realistic space travel experience.

New permanent exhibition ‘Earth from Space

In October 2023, Ars Electronica added the permanent exhibition “Earth from Space” to the Visitor Centre. This exhibition introduces visitors to Earth observation as an important area of space research. It illustrates the various aspects of space travel – from the planning and construction of space missions on Earth to their launch into space. Visual attractions include an elevation model with projection mapping and an interactive projected globe showing the Earth’s dynamic hemisphere.

Interactive satellite data display exhibits

As with previous projects for ESA, this exhibition was realised in collaboration with the German Aerospace Centre (DLR) and Garamantis. “Earth from Space” explores satellite data, including images of land, water, ice and air. Visitors can explore key global challenges such as air quality monitoring, ice melt, precision agriculture and sea level rise. There will be a special focus on ESA’s Copernicus programme of Sentinel satellites, which play a key role in Earth observation.

Space Expo invites visitors to explore the fascinating link between space and Earth observation in an informative and stimulating experience.

Ina Badics

Working with Garamantis, we were able to adapt existing ESA installations to the needs of a museum and integrate them into Space Expo.
Thanks to the flexibility of the Garamantis software and content management system, we were able to do this efficiently and with great pleasure.
